March  2005

Not a month when a lot of anything to do with flying has been brought to my attention though there has been quite a few flights from our field I am told.

Meeting day we had a Rans 14 fly in from Bob Lee, Paige came in with a SeaRey, An Air Cam also from Bob White, and a Gator member with his Cessna 150. Sunday saw Bob Touchette  and Rhett fly the Explorer.

Lot of rumblings and grumbling about Sport pilot, thirty-five DAR’s are needed in the state of Florida with the obtuse of the application form, only three have applied, and one of them was rejected. If you have any A&P experience please apply or the system will go to hell in a basket real quick.

Oh dear have you seen the site for a new housing estate already going in, S E of the field that’s not good?

I had a holiday haven’t had one in years, I have a nephew a Major in the Princess of Wales Regiment, on loan to WestPoint a two year engagement that ends in August, he has done the Iraq and Afghanistan bit, in fact when the British reported on T V, Iraq updates, he was the chap the you saw. He and his family invited me to the Military Academy in New York State, on the Hudson River, which was largely frozen when I arrived. I stayed in a Red brick home with Slate roof and central heating, reminiscent of my life in England; the surrounding country was very much like the French Alps. WestPoint has its own ski slopes The Academy is like a castle, of which I took a tour, the mess hall being the outstanding feature, 4000 cadets eating at the same time, tablecloths on the tables and twenty minutes to eat served by waitresses. I counted fourteen bottles of different things to go on the food probably to take the taste out of their mouths, what a mammoth task to feed that lot. The Church had an organ with 35000 pipes, the console had more switches than Concorde, and would I think take a genius to play it. I arrived with the snow on the ground, haven’t seen that in bunch of years either, what with Charles seeing snow and skiing for the first time in his life, he went to Arizona. I am at least done with all I need for a while to come.

Well after our Fly In, we have Sun N Fun much about the same as last year by all accounts, and it is now Sun and Fun not EAA Sun and Fun (Very Interesting)? To fly in the daily sessions like last year you will be checked for paper work Etc. If you fly in it will normal, parking in the same place, there has been a buss that there will not be very many powered parachute companies, as they are all have a tough time not selling very much. What would do my heart good would be some new Ultralights there and it could happen. The FAA have screwed up so badly and now with budget cuts it’s going to be a long drawn out affair I fear.
