May 2004

Sadly I have to report the sad loss of a very great friend. Jerry Rooks lost his battle with life Sunday the 25th April. There has been no one that has done more for the Ultralight and EAA Chapters. Jerry did it all with information of what was going and coming on In Florida. At his own expense.

Great weather was the order of the day for our Fun Fly In. April twenty-forth, four planes flew in from South Lakeland, including World Mircrolight Competitor Steve Bensinger, two trikes from Quest Air and a Challenger on Floats from Brooksville. Jack Levering

Had organized everything including the weather. Great Job Jack!

Starting with a bomb drop, spot landing, and a dead stick from a thousand feet, all who flew enjoyed it, fun and games was finished with a poker run to Bob Whites Airfield. Buddy Babcock in his new trike from South Africa The Aguilla was Grand Champion.

Marlene, Kay Levering, Linda and Kristine ran the Chuck wagon with Billy and Chas cooking some very fine Hamburgers Hot dogs Etc, New addition was a fine fruit salad which in my case went down very well, coffee was hot on time and at half mast.

Our Artie had an eightieth birthday; Treat and Marline made a wonderful cake and iced it. Treat stayed up till one thirty in the morning helping Marlene ice it with a wonderful picture of his Mallard. I never did hear any comments from him but I think he was very surprised, a good deal of work and thought from them and our Preezzy Alan.

As the day was ending and our visitors returning home, a Hawk Arrow from South Lakeland was turning on to eighteen prior to take off and one of those large dust devils picked the plane up and put him on his back, damage was minimal but enough to ground him until repairs are done. Natures a funny thing it can screw up a party in a brewery.

Chas Almond our youngest pilot demonstrated skill and judgment when he took off in his Explorer the trim tab cable broke, making the elevators vibrate at an alarming rate, scary, but Chas flew over the hangers and set the plane down beautifully in front of them, making his dad, me and all who saw it very proud of him, dammit Mum where were you? On that dam motorbike again missing it all, its high time it was taken away from you. Aint that right Charles?

Charles Cantrill his pal Eddie, Fred Griffith, and Charles Almond ran the competitions and made a super days flying. And a good day was had by all.
