November 2003

The season is over except for KittyHawk in December, and I feel happy I will not have to leave home for a while if at all. Cooperstate Arizona was a good show, the Ultralight area bigger than last year and grass, I was kept busy working both area’s, but they gave me a golf cart and all worked out great, there was one new Trike, made locally called the Extreme, not a lot one can say about it, I thought it pricey, it had wider seating other than that looked much the same as them all.  582 Rotax powered. The EAA B17 came in with a P51 which was taking people for rides at $500 a time, the P51 was busy but the B17 didn’t do even one trip, signs of the times money and jobs being short I guess.

How about a bit of nostalgia   October 1985.

IN THE NEWS

Mickey’s Ultralight Pilots. How would you react if you were a high time pilot and your employer came to you with a proposal for flying Ultralights in formation?

In addition to Tony Nicorva, John Gruener and Kerry Richter Disney hired a group of commercial pilots to star in an extravagant show over the Epcot Lagoon daily at three. Trailing rainbow smoke and turning Dragons (down below) to butterflies (dragons are portrayed tow kites) Wonder where those old guys are now? They were great!

Also in 1985,An Advanced Aviation KING COBRA ULTRALIGHT delivered Mail. “In Australia”.

How sad Rich Prentigist, President of the struggling USUA was killed in an Ultralight accident, in a Rans S 12 experimental. At Powrachute Extravaganza Columbus Kansas last month, he spent three days working on me, to get me to renew my lapsed membership, and he was such a nice guy, I did, much to his pleasure, we made a thing of it and really enjoyed each others company, Why do the good die young I ask myself?

Robbie Robinson had a Five Way By Pass operation (He just had to go one better than me)!   Plus a leaky valve repaired, on the 25th October in Orlando ORMC, he is doing very well and I am sure all the members are wishing him a speedy recovery, and we shall see his smiling face up at the airfield real soon. He did not get mine, Billy or Fred’s permission to join the ZIPPER CLUB, but we let him in anyway, cause he’s not a bad ole boy?

I visited him on Monday and he was ready to go home, and they might just let him Tuesday the 28th, He was not in his room, but in the common room with one other gentleman and Seven Ladies, I told you he was getting better. Nancy was at home making the house comfortable for his return. Is a long process to full recovery, and with his resolve he will make it. Bless him!

Sad news for Progressive Aerodyne, Buddy the nice guy who made all the bits for the kits, lived out at Killarney near Lake Apopka, he answered his door to a raging man who had had his power cut off, he had already been to one other and shot the guy in the bum, Buddy was not so lucky he shot Buddy in the heart and then shot himself

I had hoped to have, given you a glowing account of our November Air Fly In. Dave Lepow was the organizer, so he takes the blame. We were winded out with 20 –25 MPH winds making it unsafe; the right thing to do in my humble opinion was to cancel.. Still several aircraft flew in. A Rans S12, Short wing two place Challenger, three Trikes. A Subaru powered Titan Tornado, 1960 Cessna 172, RV 6, Excalibur, and two CGS Hawk Arrows. A Hughes Helicopter

Fran Cantrill Linda Owens, Shirley Resnick, Charley & “Biker Queen”! Pam Almond with Billie all kept the canteen and food flowing. Good it was Too.

Darn shame Rex Hewitt had spent many hours getting the field ready doing the roads putting up a communication tower Etc and Stuff happens. Oh Well?  Kristine Babcock got in the way and was blamed for the weather, but she seemed happy with that

It was nice to see Maria Saladino at the show she looks very well, and is kept busy keeping Vince’s Business going with her daughters up in Michigan.

Ole Jeff Montgomery was there aggravating the announcer but seeing he’s going to leave him all his money he puts up with it.! Also seen with Angel Mato’s and Artie putting the world to rights, in the Seniors hanger.

Over in England they have an Old Crocks Run, London to Brighton 1st November fifty-two miles in pouring rain the oldest car was ninety years old. On the 5th November they celebrate Guy Fawkes Day, he’s the guy who took a barrel of explosives into the Houses of Parliament, got caught and was hung. But still known as the only guy, to go into Parliament with the RIGHT IDEA, so they celebrate with fireworks. What a weird lot to be sure.
