November 2010

Wow is it a year since I wrote, can't be I am sure I did something and it never got sent on, however its that time again and we had our Annual, Winter Fly In.

What a day for weather, reminding one’s self that why we live in Florida . It was beautiful, sunny, warm, little wind... Just right!  Though there wasn't a big crowd, I guess about a couple of hundred people and thirty five planes.

Two Drifters came all the way up from Air Glades, that’s down near Okeechobee, so good to see the Drifter what an airplane, one pilot Andy Corsetti competed.

The Drifter still flies as good as anything that has wings.

Tim Williamson from Plant City came in flying his Murphy Rebel, with a Franklin Engine. Rusty Seaton with his Quicksilver.

Jeff Abrams who always supports us in his Robinson Helicopter and scored a first in the Bomb drop hitting the Tetrahedron, that never been done before.

We had two Dragonflys come over from Quest. Bobby Bailey is building two new ones), one For Rhett I am told.  I requested that at the next air show they give a demonstration of Hang Gliding, The two pilots competed April Mackin and Jim Prahl.

Buddy Babcock came in with his Trikes, a lovely Cub on Floats. Hawk Arrow from the Flying Fools, Skip Merrill with very attractive cargo in his new Searay and a whole host of others making the event worthwhile.

Charles, Fred and Allen, hosted the games, which went very well Neil Harris being Grand Champion in his Buc XA. John Weber in his Rans S 12, April Mackin in her Dragonfly and Jim Prahl in his, Howard Webb, Scott Garrett in Buccaneers and Andy Corsetti in his drifter. Two Children aged twelve and eleven were the only ones to catch the whiffle balls, and Jeff Abrams in his Robinson Helicopter.

Oh yes this made my day one of the two waffle ball catchers, said sir were you the guy that did the talking at Sun-N-Fun. I remember when my dad took me, I could have given him a hug. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.

Dr Shawn Thurston, Operations Safety manager for the Grand Bahama Airport Company, gave a very entertaining talk about flying in the Bahamas and was enjoyed by all. Reminder are own Roland Alexander, was the first to fly across the waters from the Gator field, in a Buccaneer XA.

The children enjoyed the Candy drop in honor of the  Hero of The Berlin Airlift In Germany way back in 1947-8, I enjoy doing this as I was part of it, when I served in the British Air Force.

So nice to see old members my ole mate Billy Owens and of course Linda, George Green founder member, our Chaplin Robbie Robinson, my old partner in the Challenger two place Barry Sterner, and several others

Cindy Butler and Janis Garrett, Chef Charles Almond cooking the Hamburgers so good they sold out. All made the event what is was a success. Roll On 2011
