October 2006

I have been doing the ASC Nationals since 1994 and this year ASC combined with USUA to have the US Championships at Marshal Michigan, and although I am done with traveling and shows I made this the last one away.

I also needed to say farewell to Jim and Debbie’s house, I have been a guest for so many years in Marshall, they are moving to Lake City and Cannon Creek Airpark Florida and the house is up for sale.

People are just not interested in Fly In’s and the like these days. Sport Pilot has brought about an End to an Era, so not many spectators came to what was a very good show, there where only six competitors. Local Resident Steve Bensinger from South Lakeland won the event, Flying in his CGS Hawk, he always comes to our does, and when he comes on the 28th he comes as US Champion, it was a hard fight, but he was the best very deservedly.

During the three days they had a very good variety of visiting aircraft sixty-four in all by my count but there many have been more. A very nice Sonnex, a Flying Flea, a plane I knew of but never seen and yes I did get a wonderful flight , got all excited about that and also flew in my very great friends Arronca Champ.

The Flying Flea was designed by Henri Mignet in 1934, there’s 136 of them have been built since then. A two axis control airplane. This one was number No 107 they are named and this was Madam Forget a HM1000 with a 582 Rotax Engine. Owned by Don Campbell of Chicago. Who has several more and something of a collector?

The pilot Bret Rosenau had more than twenty hours on this plane and he showed me how well the plane would fly, the landing was very different, pull the stick back and you where down, just where you wanted it. The Front wing waggles for pitch control, rear wing is fixed and the rudder for directional control, it’s a two seater comfortable all weather cockpit. The wings fold and have two wing extensions, it can be put on a trailer OR can be pulled on its own wheels, the wing extensions are called Saumons, and they also use Wankle and Sabaru engines.

Although everything was free except for vendors spots, car park, admission etc very few attended and of course it lost money, raffles Etc where used to try and get funds. Only two vendors turned up Powrachute, and Infinity Power Parachutes. And Powrachute came all the way from Kansas.

What did please me and a lot of others were the different aircraft. Eight Quicksilver’s, a 103,A Hipp”s Sportster what a nice airplane, A20 Aeropratt, Air Command Gyrocopter, RAF 2000. Gee Bee, Prowler Trike, Eindecker, Air Coupe, T Bird, Drifters Rossi Streak Trike Avid, Hipperlite, Kolb Mk3, Firestar, Kitfox, Hummel Ultracruiser, CGS Hawks Rans S7, BB Trike. Phantoms, Thundergull, Odyssey, Plus whole host of powered parachutes Infinity, Powrachute, Paladin, Buckeye Phoenix Destiny’s Six Chuters and a whole lot more I cant remember, plus Gliders who spent the weekend giving rides, even tandem parachutes sky divers, plus GA planes landing all the time on the main runway

I really enjoyed the event if only I could have done what I did all those years it would have been a glorious farewell.
